The cultivation of tobacco in Ohio was begun in Warren township in 1819 by a Methodist preacher named John D. Price, who, desirous of escaping the baneful influences of slavery, moved to Ohio from Calvert County, Maryland. Believing the soil around him would successfully grow tobacco, he sent to his old home for seed and planted the first tobacco crop in 1819. The tobacco yield proved to be so profitable that by the mid 1800's Barnesville became a principal center of the tobacco trade in Ohio.
